When a train is approaching a railway crossing and you must stop, the minimum distance from the nearest rail or gate is:

When a train is coming, stop at least 5 metres from the nearest rail or gate. This provides clearance for the train's overhang and any possible crossing-arm movement. Stop before the arm, not under it.
