A 'soft shoulder' warning sign warns drivers that:

Soft shoulder means the ground beside the paved lane is unstable — gravel, sand, or mud. Drifting onto it at speed can pull the vehicle off-line or cause a rollover. Stay on the paved surface except for emergencies.
