According to the Ontario Driver's Handbook, the safe following distance behind the vehicle ahead in normal conditions is at least:

The two-second rule gives you enough reaction time and stopping distance in normal conditions. On slippery roads or at higher speeds, increase to 3 seconds or more. Too-close following ('tailgating') is a top cause of rear-end collisions.
